ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers)

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers is a global professional association seeking to advance heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems design and construction.

Examples of some ASHRAE Standards are:
  • Standard 34 – Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants
  • Standard 55 – Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy
  • Standard 62.1 – Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality (versions: 2001 and earlier as "62", 2004 and beyond as "62.1")
  • Standard 62.2 – Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings
  • Standard 90.1 – Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings – The IESNA is a joint sponsor of this standard.
  • Standard 135 – BACnet - A Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks
  • Standard 189.1 – Standard for the Design of High Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55: Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy is an American National Standard published by ASHRAE that establishes the ranges of indoor environmental conditions to achieve acceptable thermal comfort for occupants of buildings.

If the temperature's between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the relative humidity (RH) between 30% and 70%, we're more or less comfortable. Of course, the closer the humidity is to 70%, the lower the temperature needs to be for us to be comfortable.

The optimum room temperature is between 18°C and 21°C. Minimumtemperatures of 20°C or 21°C may be required for infants, the elderly and the sick.Temperatures lower than 18°C or higher than 24°C can be a health risk.

Every homeowner should own a hygrometer that measures temperature and relative humidity (RH). The ideal relative humidity for health and comfort is about 40–50%. In the winter months, it may have to be lower than 40% RH to avoid condensation on the windows.

The average atmospheric conditions, below which humans feel comfortably, are between 21 °C and 27.5 °C concerning air temperature; from 30 to 65%, for relative humidity; and wind speed values greater than 5 m/s

Along with standards, ASHRAE offers professional certifications. These include:
  • Building Commissioning Professional Certification: Skills to manage, plan and coordinate commissioning teams for new and existing buildings
  • Building Energy Assessment Professional Certification: Training to properly evaluate equipment for energy consumption and optimization
  • Building Energy Modeling Professional Certification: Ensures competency to assess and model building systems with the full range of physics, and apply software results to validate energy models
  • High-Performance Building Design Professional Certification: Training to generate sustainability models for high-performance buildings
  • Healthcare Facility Design Professional Certification: Information on incorporating standards and regulatory codes into HVAC system design for healthcare facilities
  • Operations and Performance Management Certification: Skills to effectively manage HVAC systems and achieve performance goals relating to air quality and safety
In 2018, professionals had earned more than 2,500 certifications to expand their industry knowledge and learn how to integrate ASHRAE standards into their everyday work.

ASHRAE certification programs serve to reinforce that reputation. The Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP) and Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) certifications have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as meeting the Better Buildings Workforce Guidelines (BBWG).
